Phone System fraud (aka Dial Through Fraud) is rife in the UK and is estimated to cost organisations in the region of £1bn per annum. In most cases, this could be avoided by ensuring preventative measures are in place to stifle hackers. Fraudsters use sophisticated auto-diallers to call random telephone numbers day and night with the objective of connecting to an organisation’s voicemail extension. Once connected, they can gain control of your phone system by entering a PIN number. If the PIN number is still set at the default factory setting or not very secure – then the fraudster can easily gain control of your phone system to allow outbound calls to be made at the owners’ expense.
